Journalists' Hotels in Baghdad Attacked, 17 Dead
Seventeen people were killed and twelve wounded when three car bombs exploded close to a fortified hotel compound used by foreign journalists in Baghdad on Monday, police said.
An AP photographer at a checkpoint at the northwest corner of the hotel said at least 3 fellow photographers were injured and taken away by ambulance.
The bombs sent huge clouds of smoke and dust into the air as they exploded below the concrete towers of the Sheraton and Palestine hotels in the city center, which are guarded by U.S. troops.
Witnesses said the first bomb appeared to be in a car that drove between the two hotels, which have long housed international journalists and foreign contractors in Baghdad.
The ground floor of the Sheraton hotel suffered severe damage and several people were wounded, a hotel official told Reuters by telephone.
Large pieces of shrapnel were thrown hundreds of meters into neighboring streets, windows were blown out in houses and several people suffered minor injuries from flying glass.
